Bosch GCM12SD Review – Still relevant in 2020?

Bosch GCM12SD miter saw review

The first thing that stands out when you unbox the Bosch gcm12sd 12” dual-bevel glide miter saw is the innovative glide arm mechanism, completely refreshing from the slider rails used by rivaling sliding dual-bevel saws.

I was immediately blown away by not only the premium look and features but also by its ease of use. After adjusting the saw and working with it for half an hour, it became like a third hand.

What else is in the box?

  • 12 inch 60 Tooth Carbide-Tipped Blade
  • Blade Removal Wrench
  • One Vertical Clamp
  • Dust bag/assembly
  • Vacuum Adapter Elbow

Another thing to note is the manual bosch power tools come with, they really are among the best; made by humans – for humans.

The industry-changing axial glide arm this miter saw comes with not only makes it look refreshing and cool, but it also comes with two added benefits over the conventional sliders – as it has no exposed grease joints the arm doesn’t get compromised and sticky, an issue found often in regular sliding compound miter saws.

Reduced space is the second benefit, because of the Glide Arm design you can put your saw right up against the wall without a problem. Conventional sliding miter saws have rails that extend beyond the saw itself, causing you to have to put it far away from the wall.

From the back to the very front, this saw only takes up 33 inches! We’ve compared it to our Makita Sliding Saw which comes in at 41 inches, that’s 8 inches saved!

This makes it the perfect miter saw for a semi-permanent or fixed position in your shop, garage or wherever you wish to store your saw.

Cutting capacity

This Bosch Glide Miter Saw comes with a 3 horsepower, 15 amp motor and a blade speed of 3800 rpm. This allows smooth and powerful cuts – even with the stock blade attached. It provides an expanded 14” of horizontal cutting capacity and 6-½ “ of maximum vertical cutting capacity.

As this is a dual-bevel miter saw, it bevels 0 to 50 degrees in both the left and right directions and the miter detents at 0°, 33.9°, and 45° allow for the most accurate bevel and compound cuts.

The saw bed is very flat and wide, creating a lot of working surface. On the sides, you have access to retractable supports to increase the workable surface even more.

Bosch Axial Glide System

The axial Glide arm is what truly sets this miter saw apart from any other saw on the market today. I find it to be incredibly smooth in use and while it comes loose out of the box, it can be adjusted to your own preference – from really loose to extra firm.

Dust collection in the Bosch GCM12SD

Somewhat a known problem on many miter saws is its capability of collecting dust. In most cases, this is less than ideal. On the box, the Bosch GCM12SD promises a dust collection of around 90%. I’ve found this to be a bit less than accurate, in my personal experience it comes closer to 70%.

It’s nowhere near the kind of dust collection you can expect from another premium miter saw like the Festool Kapex which also promises a more believable 90% of dust collection. But of course, it comes at a far higher price point as well.

That being said, when it comes to cleanliness it still belongs in the top bracket when comparing to the market as a whole. I definitely recommend you hook it up to a shop vac to increase the dust extraction process.

Is the bosch GCM12SD portable?

The answer, unfortunately – is no. At 65 pounds this miter saw can not be classified as portable. If you’re in the market for a job site friendly miter saw, you might want to consider different options.

Unless you’re willing to splurge some extra cash on the T4B Bosch miter saw stand, this 65-pound miter saw is too heavy to be considered portable.

What we don’t like

Every miter saw comes with its pros and cons, even the premium ones. We’ve already discussed how big of a fan we are of Bosch’s innovative glide arm, so here’s what we think could be improved or is missing from the Bosch GCM12SD.

  • No laser feature: for its premium price tag, this should be included.
  • Very heavy: not good for taking with you to job sites without a stand
  • No soft start feature: something that is added on the GCM12GDL model

30-day money-back guarantee

If you’re worried about whether the saw is right for you, it comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee so you can always order it to see if it’s right for you and send it back if it’s not. If you’re an amazon prime customer, shipping and returns will be free.

Bosch miter saws also come with a 1-year warranty in case something goes awry.

If you’re looking for a premium, fixed position miter saw that doesn’t take up much space due to its compact design and doesn’t disappoint in accuracy, the bosch gcm12sd will be the last miter saw you ever buy.
